A seven-year-old girl suffered serious injuries after the car she was travelling in crashed in Co Laois this evening.

The girl, her four-year-old sister and their mother, were travelling in a car that crashed outside Portarlington.

There were three cars involved in the incident. The male driver of one of the other vehicles was arrested at the scene and is currently detained at Portlaoise Garda station. He is in his 20s.

The mother and two children are being treated at Tullamore Hospital. Medical staff originally believed the older girl was in a critical condition but her injuries are now described as non life-threatening

It’s understood the collision occurred at 5pm on the R419 road to Bracknagh, two kilometres outside Portarlington.

The road is closed this evening for a forensic examination.
