A German tourist has been airlifted to hospital after breaking an ankle while hiking in a beauty spot in West Cork this afternoon.

The 61-year-old woman sustained the injury while hiking near Gougane Barra.

But due to the remote location where she was injured, the Shannon Rescue helicopter 115 was dispatched to the scene to aid members of the Kerry Mountain Rescue team.

The woman was then airlifted to Kerry University Hospital in Tralee.
