Gardai from Roscrea, Nenagh and Birr assisted by the Regional Support Unit, the Tipperary Divisional Drug Unit and the Garda Dog Unit carried out 5 planned searches in the Roscrea area this morning.

Two men were arrested for obstruction during the course of the searches and brought to Roscrea Garda Station. They have both since been released.

The search operation comes in the wake of two well publicised meetings held in the town to highlight concerns over “the scourge of drugs”.

Concerned residents have blamed the emerging drugs culture for the loss of many young lives in recent years.

The second public - attended by more than 1,000 people - was also attended by gardai and a number of public representatives.

The raids took place on a number of premises this morning.

Meanwhile, gardaí have arrested a man and seized drugs as part of an investigation targeting the sale and supply of drugs in Co Tipperary.

Heroin, amphetamine and cannabis with a combined estimated street value of  €40,000 was seized when Gardaí raided a house in Thurles last night.

A man in his 30s was arrested at the scene.

He is currently detained at Thurles Garda Station, where he can be held for up to seven days.

A woman in her 20s was later arrested this afternoon in Thurles.

She has since been released without charge.
