Gardaí in Co Donegal say they are investigating the attempted abduction of a schoolboy.

The child was riding his bike through the village of Kerrykeel on the Fanad peninsula on Sunday night when the incident happened.

The boy later told gardaí that a man in a van pulled up alongside him and asked the boy to get into the vehicle.

The child ran from the scene and told his parents who immediately called gardaí in Milford.

The man was wearing a hooded top and spoke with a Donegal accent.

Supt David Kelly said officers were treating the incident 'very seriously'.

"We would ask parents to advise children not to speak to anyone they don't know and not to take lifts from anyone they don't know," he said.

The van may have been a Renault Kangoo type vehicle.

Gardaí launched a search of the area but were unable to locate the van.
