A 26-year-old man was knocked off his bicycle by a vehicle on Strand Road in Baldoyle shortly before 1am.

The car failed to remain at the scene while the cyclist was rushed to hospital in a serious condition.

Medical staff initially believed that his injuries were life threatening but his condition improved overnight.

It is believed he suffered spinal and leg injuries in the accident.

The victim, who works as a night porter in a local hotel, travelled to Ireland in the last number of months to learn English.

Gardaí later seized a black Volvo car in Coolock and they are continuing to search for the driver.

A source said the vehicle had overtaken a line of traffic before striking the cyclist.
