Four men arrested following discovery of 'explosive device' as part of dissident investigation

Four men have been arrested following the discovery of an 'explosive device' in a vehicle.

The discovery of the suspected improvised explosive device was found in a car on the R392 at Forgney, near Ballymahon, Co Longford.

Gardai with the Special Detective Unit and Crime and Security Section detained the men as part of ongoing investigations into dissident republican activity members.

The men, aged from the late 20s to late 40s, are currently in custody at garda stations in Co Longford under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939 as amended.

The scene on R392 at Forgney was preserved and a safety cordon put in place while the army bomb unit attended the scene.

The scene was later declared safe and the road reopened.

A house that was searched in a follow up search has been preserved for a technical examination.

Investigations are continuing.
