Former Kerry football star Patrick Curtin (26) passes away after car accident

Former Kerry footballer Patrick Curtin (26) has passed away after sustaining injuries in a car accident in Central America before Christmas.

The tragic news was announced by Kerry GAA this morning in a statement released on their website.

The 26-year-old was injured in an accident while working in Guatemala before Christmas.

He was subsequently airlifted to hospital in Miami where he passed away earlier today.

Mr Curtin's family had been maintaining a bedside vigil in the US this week after he had been airlifted to Miami this week.

Mr Curtin, from Moyvane, is understood to have fallen from a moving vehicle while driving in Guatemala last Friday.

The former minor and senior footballer was an employee with for Liebherr Container Cranes in Killarney and had been in Guatemala since September.

It is understood that Mr Curtin suffered serious head injuries in the accident and was initially treated at a local hospital before being transferred to another hospital in Miami.

He was in coma and a number of family members had travelled from his home in Moyvane to be with him.

During his Kerry football career, Mr Curtin made 11 minor championship appearances during 2006 and 2007, losing the 2006 All Ireland final to Roscommon after a replay.

As well as playing three championship games at U21 level, he was also part of the senior squad in 2012/2013, making 10 league and six championship appearances for his county.

In a statement, Kerry GAA said: "It is with deep regret that Kerry GAA has learned of the death of Patrick Curtin of Moyvane.

"The 26-year-old was injured in an accident while working in Guatemala before Christmas and was subsequently airlifted to hospital in Miami where he passed away earlier today.

"Patrick played in all grades of intercounty football with Kerry; he played Minor in 2006 and 2007, Under 21 in 2009 and 2010, Junior in 2009 and made his Senior Championship debut against Tipperary in 2012 having made his League debut earlier that year against Dublin.

"In all, Patrick made six Championship and 10 League appearances for the Kingdom.

"Kerry GAA extends its deepest sympathy to his family, friends and work colleagues and also to his Club, Moyvane."
