A CityJet plane was forced to return back to Dublin Airport shortly after departure this morning.

Flight WX118 left the runway London-bound at 730am but circled back towards Dublin less than an hour later.

A spokesperson for CityJet told that a technical issue with the front windscreen led to the pilot's decision to abort the flight.

"Normal safety protocol meant that the plane had to return so that the windscreen issue could be examined," the spokesperson said.

"Customers will be accommodated on other flights. Any inconvenience is regrettable but safety comes first."

It is understood that the plane - which holds between 90-95 passengers - was almost full to capacity.

According to Cityjet, the aircraft has landed safely in Dublin and an investigation is ongoing.
