Firefighters tackle major blaze as public urged to avoid the area and several businesses close

Large bangs could be heard and several businesses had to be evacuated after a major fire broke out in the early hours of this morning.

Thick black smoke can be seen coming from the blaze at a factoryr in Raheen Industrial Estate, Limerick.

The alarm was raised shortly after 3am and five units from Limerick City Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene, alongside crews from Co Limerick and Shannon.

Limerick Fire Tweeted this afternoon: "Busy 48 hours! We're on scene at another Commercial Fire. Raheen Industrial Estate.

"No reported injuries. Close doors & windows."

The road has been closed and the public are advised to avoid the area.

TV3 reports that several businesses, including a local petrol station, have been shut as a precaution.

People living nearby have been urged to close their windows and doors.

Thankfully there have been no reported injuries yet but fire crews are expected to remain at the scene for the next few hours.
