Two firms are being sought to provide wind power forecasting services, needed to decide whether wind turbines or traditional power stations should be used to power homes and businesses.

Accurate forecasting allows the system to be operated securely, safely and economically, and will become crucial in the coming years as the number of wind farms increases.

The tender comes as a new report says local communities should be offered the chance to take a stake in wind farms.

Investment in wind energy is increasing, with the amount of power expected to double over the coming years.

Documents published by EirGrid say the successful bidders will provide short-term wind power forecasts, every 15 minutes and "multiple long-term" forecasts up to five days ahead.

Bids must be received by August 18.
