Driver of car in which four friends died in Athy crash charged with dangerous driving

The driver of a car that crashed into a van killing four young friends has been charged with dangerous driving.

Dayna Kearney (21), from Cross Neen, Carlow appeared before Athy District Court in Co Kildare earlier today.

She was charged in relation to the incident that occurred on the N78 Athy Link Road at Burtown on January 6 2015.

Aisling Middleton, Niamh Doyle and Gemma Nolan, who were all 19-years-old and from Athy were killed instantly.

Their friend 20-year-old Chermaine Carroll, from Carlow also died instantly.

The close group of pals were returning from a day out ice-skating.

Ms Kearney was left fighting for her life after the VW Polo she was driving collided head-on with the van.

The case has been adjourned until April 12.
