Driver (70) blindfolded and dumped on the road after terrifying car hijack
An elderly driver is recovering this week after a terrifying hijack ordeal in Co Wicklow last week.
Gardaí have confirmed that the 70-year-old man was returning home through Aughrim last Wednesday, September 27, when two people suddenly jumped into the back of his 4x4 and placed a hood over his head.
The Wicklow People is reporting that the man was then bundled into the back of the vehicle driven around for a period of time while the suspects stole a number of items from the car.
According to local reports the driver was forced out of the 4x4 before hijackers sped away in the vehicle.
The terrified driver managed to make his way by foot to the rural town of Laragh, where he raised the alarm.
The stolen vehicle was discovered burnt out near Laragh the following morning at 7.30am.
A forensic examination will take place on the vehicle in a bid to identify the culprits.
Gardaí are also examining CCTV footage from the area.
In a statement a garda spokesman said officers in Wicklow are investigating a reported carjacking incident on September 27.
"The incident occurred on Main St, Aughrim in the early hours of the morning. A 4x4 vehicle was taken during the incident from a 70 year-old local man.
"The vehicle was later recovered burnt out near Laragh. A technical examination of the vehicle was carried out and enquiries are ongoing. No arrests have been made to date."
