Dramatic photos of stormy Irish weather as muggy conditions lead to thunderstorms

OUR hot and humid temperatures are leading to thunderstorms across the country as photographers captured some spectacular images in Cork overnight.

Forecasters in Met Eireann are warning people to keep a brolly, wellies and raingear if going outside today.

Some 27mm of rainfall was recorded at weather stations along the south coast.

A band of heavy rainfall has moved across the country from the south and south east coasts, up to the north.

After this has cleared, another band of showers is expected.

“There has been a significant amount of thunderstorms.

“There is a risk that there will be more throughout the day as there is so much heat and humidity there,” a Met Eireann spokesperson told independent.ie.

“If you’re going anywhere today, there’s a chance you’ll get a good soaking.

“It will be a mixed bag for the weekend – it’s quite warm but still humid and there is a risk of showers on most days but it won’t be as widespread.”

Meanwhile, some spectacular photos have emerged of the Irish weather overnight as quick thinking photographers turned their lens to the sky and snapped away.

The south of the country was hit with the worst of the weather last night as the rest of the country woke up to torrent downpours this morning.

Forecasters in Met Eireann are warning people to keep a brolly, wellies and raingear if going outside today.

Temperatures over the weekend are expected to range from 19 to 23 degrees.

Motorists are urged to exercise extreme care while driving this morning due to wet conditions and possible localised flooding.

The ESB is ‘aware of several lightening related power outages’ this morning.

A number of power outages have been reported in Wicklow, Wexford and Dublin this morning.

The company said they are working to fix the faults this morning
