Coastguard launches search for fisherman feared missing off coast of Mayo

The Coastguard has launched a search off the coast of Mayo as a lobster fisherman is feared missing.
A relative of the man, who is understood to have been in the vessel by himself, contacted the coastguard as he failed to return back at the time it was due earlier this evening.
Local lifeboats, the Ballyglass Coastguard unit and the Rescue 115 helicopter from the Shannon base are conducting a search off the coast of Belmullet, Co Mayo.
Malin Head Coastguard confirmed that shortly before 9pm, a vessel was located on the beach at Benwee Head, close to the area. However, the man- who is understood to be aged in his 20s- has not yet been rescued.
A member of the Irish Coastguard said that concerns are growing his safety.
The search is ongoing but Is now winding down due to weather conditions and visibility.
“A little search will be carried out throughout the night, but it will properly resume again at about 6am when it is brighter,” a spokesman for the coastguard added.
