Childcare is still holding women back – Rhona Mahony
IT can be "just as easy" for a man to stay at home as a child minder as it is for a woman – and this trend would mean more women can hold down top-level jobs.
The master of the largest maternity hospital in the country, Dr Rhona Mahony, said the challenges of child rearing were now a huge issue for young couples in the workplace.
Dr Mahony was embroiled in controversy last year, over a privately-funded alleged €45,000 top-up, to her combined salary and allowances which totalled €235,000.
Speaking on the 'Sunday With Miriam' RTE radio programme, which airs tomorrow, she said the negative publicity was "not pleasant".
Asked why women are not holding down more senior positions in the workplace, she replied: "The elephant in the room always is childbirth.
"We go to great lengths to ignore this as a contributing factor as to why women don't progress in careers."
