One of Cathriona White's closest friends says her life could have been saved if she had written a foreboding message on Facebook, instead of Twitter.
Ms White, the ex-girlfriend of Jim Carrey, split from the Hollywood actor on Thursday.
The same day she composed a tweet, bidding her followers goodbye.
"Signing off Twitter, I hope I have been a light to my nearest and dearest," she wrote.
Judd Weiss, who had been close friends with Cathriona since 2012, believes her life may have been saved if instead she had written the message on Facebook.
Speaking to the Irish Independent from Los Angeles, the 35-year-old estate agent said that if this had happened, the message would have been seen as a cry for help and more people would have seen it.
"Tweets just go out and they're lost in the ether," he said.
He explained that there may not necessarily be a regular check of a person's Twitter messages by those to whom they are closest.
"But if she had written that on Facebook, friends would have been notified and may have called her. It was such a suspicious tweet; there's no way that would have gone unnoticed if it was posted on Facebook."
He recalled how Cathriona seemed "normal" the last time he met her four months ago.
"I got to know her after I started dating her best friend in 2012. I last saw Cathriona in May, right after she got back from New York, where she had met Jim Carrey.
"She was in a very good mood. But she was always extremely private about herself and Jim. She didn't want people to know they were dating."
He stressed she didn't like to "advertise" her private life, adding: "She avoided the media completely."
Mr Weiss said the 30-year-old was an extremely "quiet person who wasn't very expressive with how she was feeling".
"I hung out with her more frequently in 2012 and she was such a kind, beautiful, sweet and gracious person. She was very friendly but still very reserved.
"But her death doesn't make any sense to me; she had so much potential ahead of her."
While there is speculation that Ms White's death may have been suicide, an official ruling has not yet been made.
