A MAN has been seriously injured in a shooting incident in a housing estate in County Limerick.

The victim who is in his thirties was shot outside a house at Castleview, Newcastle West, at around 3.30pm.

It's understood he was struck on his right side after a gun man fired a single shot from a shot gun.

A woman also suffered less serious injuries believed to be pellet type wounds.

It is understood that the man and woman are brother and sister.

The siblings were taken to by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick.

Gardaí at Newcastle West have appealed for witnesses and in particular any information about a silver coloured Volkswagen Passat with a 03 registration plate seen in the area at the time.

Detectives are working to establish a motive for the attack and no arrests have yet been made.

The scene of the shooting has been sealed off for a full forensic investigation.
