The body of a man found in a crashed car on the outskirts of Galway city may have lain there for days.

Gardai in the city are now appealing for witnesses after the remains were found in the crashed car at the centre of the Martin roundabout earlier today.

The scene was hidden from view by trees and was only discovered after a passenger on a bus noticed a section of the car and notified gardai.

The man, who is believed to be in his 60s or 70s has not yet been identified. He was the sole occupant of the car.

Gardai believe the man died after his car collided with trees on the roundabout. They believe he may have been at the scene for a number of days.

They are now appealing for anyone who had information on the crash to come forward.

The man's remains have been removed to Galway University Hospital where a post mortem will be carried out.
