Beer kegs seized in crackdown

Gardai recovered more than a thousand stolen beer kegs after a crackdown on gangs involved in a metal theft racket.

Officers from the force's organised crime unit raided over 70 premises, including scrapyards, in counties Wicklow, Dublin and Cavan.

During a two-day operation, they arrested 27 suspects for offences ranging from burglary to theft and related crimes while also detecting a large number of breaches of the Road Traffic Acts.

Gardai said last night the operation was carried out with the co-operation of the Metal Theft Forum, local authorities and other interested groups with responsibility for enforcing the legislation in that area.
