Army Bomb Disposal team called to Longford following discovery of explosive device

A viable Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was found in Co Longford tonight.

The device was found by gardai during a search of a private vehicle on a rural road approximately four miles outside of Ballymahon, Co Longford.

Upon the discovery, gardai called an Army Bomb Disposal team to the scene.

The area was cordoned off and road closures were put in place.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team (EOD) arrived at the scene at 9.11pm.

The device was made safe at the location without the need for a controlled explosion.

Items associated with the device have been given to gardai for their investigation.

The scene was declared safe at 10.35pm.
