An armed raider is being hunted after terrorising a postmistress and escaping with a small amount of cash.

Gardaí in Roscommon are leading the investigation into the raid on the post office in Knockcroghery on Saturday afternoon.

The raider, aged in his 20s or early 30s, had his face concealed when he entered the post office brandishing a knife.

He shouted at the postmistress and demanded money. The distressed woman was unable to prevent him from taking a small amount of cash before he fled from the premises.

He made his escape in a blue or silver hatchback car and is thought to have been travelling in the direction of Roscommon town. The boot of his car is believed to have been open.

The raider wore blue clothing, was slim and about 6ft tall.

Gardaí at Roscommon are appealing for information in connection with the raid. Specifically, they are anxious to speak to anyone in the vicinity at about 3pm on Saturday.

Witnesses can contact investigating gardaí at 090 6638300.
