Almost 40 mobile phones have been seized at Ireland’s highest security prison in Portlaoise after one of the biggest ever clampdowns against dissident Republican prisoners.
Computer memory sticks and modems have also been seized.
Searches are still ongoing at the high security facility in Co Laois this evening after the planned top secret operation involving specialised prison officers and gardai started shortly after dawn today.
In a statement, a Prison Services spokesman told Independent.ie: “ A major search, by the Operational Support Group and Portlaoise Prison staff, is currently underway in the E Block of Portlaoise Prison which houses subversive prisoners.
“The search commenced at 7am this morning and is a planned intelligence led search.”
It is understood that some of Ireland’s most dangerous terrorists have been targeted in the raid.
