Online hospitality service Airbnb has asked its 4,500 hosts to lobby for rent relief ahead of Budget 2015. The website allows users to rent out spare rooms or entire properties. Airbnb informed registered hosts two weeks ago that they were liable to pay restrospective tax bills for 2014.
In its latest update for Irish hosts, the company said Revenue’s interpretation of the tax law is ‘challengeable’ and that rent-a-room relief should apply to home sharing.
“We agree with legal and tax experts that Revenue’s interpretation of the tax law is challengeable and that rent-a-room relief should apply to home sharing,” Airbnb said in its correspondence to hosts.
The company relates information from international accounting firm Ernst and Young to hosts in its correspondence.
The company is set to report host earnings from May 1, 2014, to December 31, 2014, including cleaning fees to Revenue next month.
