A total of 1,134 firearms have been reported stolen in the past four years.

These include 53 weapons that were taken last year.

A further 159 firearms were reported lost in the same four-year period, of which 53 disappeared in 2013.

Gardai last night warned all firearm owners that they had a responsibility to ensure that every precaution was taken to keep their guns secure and prevent them from falling into the hands of criminals.

The garda annual review of the operation of firearms legislation, published yesterday by Acting Garda Commissioner Noirin O'Sullivan, showed that a total of 168,597 certificates were issued in 2013.
