News chief was candidate for top job
ED Mulhall has served as RTE's head of news for 14 years and has worked at the broadcaster for almost his entire career.
An honours graduate of economics and politics at TCD, Mr Mulhall from Athy, Co Kildare, joined RTE in 1979 as a current affairs radio producer.
He became a television producer and director in 1988 and later that year was appointed as programme editor of TV news.
During that time he was responsible for editing the broadcaster's flagship 'Six One' news programme.
In 1994, he was appointed as managing editor of RTE's newsroom and was given his current position three years later.
He currently holds responsibility for the editorial direction of all news output and holds managerial control of news resources. He was a candidate to become the next director general of RTE in 2010. However, the position went to Noel Curren, former head of television.
