NEW Rose of Tralee Maria Walsh got an icey start to her role as she became the latest person to rise to the Ice Bucket Challenge.
Maria (27) who won the contest representing Philadelphia had been nominated by 2FM's Jennifer Maguire from the Breakfast Republic show.
She in turn has nominated the 2005 Rose and fellow Mayo woman Aoibhinn Ni Shuilleabhain, the first ever Rose of Tralee Alice O'Sullivan, and the 1989 Rose Sinead Boyle, who was a judge at this year's festival. Maria's escort Conor Walsh did the honours in Tralee Town Park, making sure she got a good drenching in the fountain.
"Thank you Breakfast Republic for the nomination. It's a worthy cause so I have no problem doing it," she said with grace.
She was given bucket loads of encouragement - as well as water - as hundreds of amused bystanders gathered to watch the spectacle.
Top jockeys Barry Geraghty and Paul Townend are due to undergo the challenge today.
The Cheltenham Gold Cup champion and his weighroom colleague have agreed to a drenching in support of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.
They willl be joined by trainer and jockey John Cullen who also accepted the challenge.
