New laws approved for cigarette pack images
SHOCKING pictures of throat cancer and rotting teeth are to appear on cigarette packets following new regulations, writes Eilish O'Regan.
The images, which are aimed at warning smokers of the danger of cigarettes, will appear on the packets from February 2013.
Health Minister James Reilly said yesterday he approved and signed the regulation that will put the onus on manufacturers to put the images on their products.
All tobacco products placed on the market on or after February 2013 must comply with the new regulations.
"We should never lose sight of the health consequences of smoking which remains the greatest single cause of preventable illness and premature death in Ireland, killing over 5,200 people a year," Dr Reilly said yesterday.
"Every year, premature deaths caused by tobacco use in Ireland are far greater than the combined death toll from car accidents, fires, heroin, cocaine, murder and suicide."
