AN eagle-eyed neighbour helped gardai disrupt an armed gang holding a retired shopkeeper and his wife captive in their home yesterday.
The four armed raiders forced their way into the house at Ashfield, Templeogue, south Dublin, around 10am and threatened the couple before demanding cash.
The thugs clamped handcuffs on their victims -- named last night as Jimmy Montaine and his wife, Sally -- and then began searching the house for money.
Gardai believe the raiders mistakenly thought that the couple, who are both in their 60s, had taken home a large sum of cash from a local golf club.
Uniformed and plainclothes units from Terenure sped to the scene when they were alerted by a passing neighbour, who noticed men acting suspiciously at the house.
Gardai arrested one man at the scene and a second was detained shortly afterwards in the Rathmines area.
The two suspects, aged 35 and 25, are both known to gardai. A search for two other suspects was stepped up last night and patrols throughout the south city were on alert for the men. Gardai last night appealed for anyone with information to contact the Terenure station on 01-666 6400.
