Narrow escape for pair following head-on collision with stolen car

Georgina O'Halloran

THE occupants of a car had a narrow escape last night when their vehicle was involved in a collision with a second car, which gardai believe was stolen.

The dramatic incident occurred on the Skew Bridge on the Lower Glanmire Road in Cork city at 5.30pm.

A garda spokesman said the male driver of the car, which is believed to have been stolen, fled the scene following the incident and suffered a number of injuries when he fell.

Members of an Garda Siochana, personnel from Cork Fire Service and two HSE ambulances attended the scene and he was taken to hospital.

The occupants of the other car -- who are believed to be a man and woman -- were lucky to escape with minor injuries.

Eyewitnesses reported that the second car was overtaking traffic along the Lower Glanmire before the car hit another car "head-on".

They said the driver left his vehicle and tried to flee by jumping over a wall at the bridge, where there was a drop of more than 30 feet. He fell on to railway tracks and was later helped by emergency services.
