Patricia Hourihan (21), a commerce student living in Cork, was told on December 17 it would take a further six weeks for her to receive her licence despite the fact she has been waiting since the start of November.

"I explained to them I have my driving test booked and I wouldn't be able to sit the test without the licence.

"She was very unhelpful and said there was nothing she could do," she said.

Patricia turned to social media to vent her irritation.

"I got a response from the RSA on Twitter and nothing on email.

"They asked for my details and rang me back within an hour. The man I spoke to was helpful -- he said he would try get my licence processed before Christmas but there was no guarantee.

"I can't understand what was wrong with the old system in the first place.

"You would be issued a licence straight away and there was no waiting for one to come in the post.

"Waiting five weeks for a licence is ridiculous. I understand it is a new system but it shouldn't take that long."
