POPULAR RTE broadcaster John Murray said he is looking forward to going back on air today and thanking his listeners for their good wishes.

The Radio One host returns to his 9am slot after a seven month absence due to illness.

"I'm looking forward to being back on air and especially to getting the opportunity to thank everybody for all their good wishes which have carried me through the last few months," Murray told the Irish Independent last night.

Miriam O'Callaghan had been filling in on behalf of the father of two.

Murray took over the 9am slot from Ryan Tubridy three years ago when Tubridy moved to 2FM following the death of Gerry Ryan.

The 9am Radio One slot is regarded as particularly important since it follows 'Morning Ireland', the country's most popular radio show.
