Post-mortem results today are expected to confirm that Tom Fitzgerald (75) and his wife Kitty (72) were killed as a result of a murder-suicide at their home in Irishtown, Co Mayo, on Tuesday afternoon.

Their son, Paul (37), was rushed to hospital in Galway with serious head injuries and has since been taken to Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, for further treatment.

It is understood Kitty was found lying in a pool of blood inside the house, while Tom was found lying dead outside.

Chief Superintendent in Claremorris, Pat Diskin, said: "While this is a very serious incident, I'll be satisfied the answers to our inquiries lie within the location of the incident.

"We're at very early stages of the investigation and our various teams are doing serious work in relation to this matter and we're obviously trying to establish the full facts surrounding the tragedy."

The State pathologist's office is due to conduct the post mortems today.
