Murder accused cheered at court

Kieran McLaughlin

Supporters have cheered a man as he arrived at court in Northern Ireland to face murder charges.

Kieran McLaughlin, 58, from Elaghmore Park in Galliagh, Derry, is accused of killing Barry McCrory in the city earlier this month.

The 35-year-old victim was shot dead in his girlfriend's flat in Shipquay Street on October 10.

At Derry Magistrates Court, McLaughlin was charged with murder, and possession of a gun and ammunition.

During the brief hearing a PSNI detective said the murder was not believed to be terrorist related.

McLaughlin spoke only to confirm his name and that he understood the charges.

He was remanded in custody to appear again before the court via video-link next month.

More than a dozen supporters outside cheered him as he arrived and left the courthouse at Bishop Street in central Derry.
