A YOUNG mother and her two-year-old daughter were fighting for their lives last night following a head-on collision in a small village.

The 22-year-old woman and her daughter are in a critical but stable condition.

The woman's other child, a five-year-old girl, suffered less serious injuries in the collision.

The accident occurred in the village of Darragh, Co Clare, at 2.45pm yesterday on the N68 road from Ennis to Kilrush.

The woman is believed to live in Ennis about 10kms away.

Shop owner Michael Sheedy said he heard a loud bang and ran out to find the front ends of the woman's Toyota Avensis and a Citroen C5 seriously damaged.

The male driver of the Citroen was also injured in the crash. However, his injuries are understood to be relatively minor.

In a tragic coincidence, the man, in his early 40s, tragically lost his own son in a accident near Tralee, Co Kerry just over a fortnight ago.

Gardai are investigating the possibility that one of the drivers may have been temporarily blinded by the glare of the sun.
