IT'S a depressing common occurrence in our cities and towns – but this one had a happy ending.

A stunned young woman, who had a mobile phone grabbed from her by a mugger, took the brave decision to give chase.

Office staff finishing work at the IFSC on Friday were astonished to see the victim take on the mugger, with the help of a cyclist and Luas security staff. The incident took place just after 6pm on Friday on Dublin's Amiens Street.

Several metres up the road, the panicking thief stumbled as his pursuers closed in.

The startling mugging was witnessed by dozens of people.

"It was great to see the guy caught," one witness told the Irish Independent.

Another onlooker said: "There was a scream from the woman in front of me. A man had stolen her iPhone. The next minute, she's chasing the thief down the road. Luas security guards appeared out of nowhere and grabbed him."

The witness added: "The woman got her mobile back. But it just shows you have to be careful with your phone in public."
