Mowers on the move for charity

MOTORISTS were doing double-takes yesterday when almost 50 ride-on lawnmowers took to the road for a charity event.
It was like a scene from the Hollywood film 'The Straight Story' when men and women from Nobber, Co Meath, took their lawnmowers out for an 18km run -- but not a blade of grass was cut.
The lawnmower people came together to raise money for St Mary's Special School in Johnstown, Navan. The event raised more than €3,100. The mowers travelled 18km to the nearby Wilkinstown.
Organiser James Carolan of Carolan Coaches said: "When we came up with the idea, we thought we would have huge difficulties because the mowers were being taken out on the public road, but we received great cooperation from the Garda in Nobber and the Superintendent in Navan."
