Katie Murphy (16) was killed in a single-vehicle crash near the entrance to the Carrigeenlea estate on the Cliff Road in Tramore.

The male driver of the car (17) escaped with minor injuries, while two others, a boy and a girl, also aged 17, were seriously injured when the car collided side-on with a wall.

Katie, of Castlewoods estate at Ballinamona between Waterford city and Tramore, was a fifth-year student.

The funeral will arrive to the Sacred Heart Church, The Folly, today at 2.30pm. The ceremony will be followed by a private cremation.

The family have requested family flowers online and said any donations can be given to Waterford Hospice.

The principal of the school Katie Murphy yesterday paid tribute to the "wonderful young woman" whose life was cut short.

Edel Connolly, of St Angela's Ursuline School, was speaking at the Bicentenary celebrations for the 'Ursuline Waterford' in the city, the order that set up and still runs the school where Katie was a pupil.

"It is also about a wonderful young woman, our own Katie Murphy, our fifth-year, who God has seen fit to take to his side.

"And today, in the marking of our 200 years of achievement, we are also marking a beautiful life cut short."

Katie's best friend Claire Lombard has since paid tribute to her pal, saying; "Katie was always smiling and laughing. She made everyone happy no matter how sad they were."

Her father, Hilary Murphy, said she was a "beautiful girl" and they didn't know how they would be able to cope without her.

"Our beautiful daughter was taken from us last night in a car accident," he said the day after the crash.

"We loved her so very much and I don't know how we can cope without her."
