Mourners say final farewell to 'Riordans' star Moira
THE curtain came down on a piece of TV history yesterday with the funeral of actress Moira Deady (right).
Best known for playing Mary Riordan in RTE drama 'The Riordans', she was remembered as a "staunchly independent woman" who had the "stage in her blood".
Hundreds of mourners at the Holy Rosary Church in Greystones, Co Wicklow, heard her son, Kevin Hoey, pay a moving tribute to the woman who played the matriarch of the popular Sunday night rural drama.
There was laughter when her son recounted how the public often believed that his mother was indeed married to her screen husband John Cowley, who played Tom Riordan.
Mr Hoey recounted how the actors were offered the bridal suite by a receptionist after checking into a country hotel. When Moira told her they wanted separate rooms, she sighed: "Did you have a row?"
The show's writer, Wesley Burrows, said: "It's a bit daunting for an actress to be saddled with the one part so long and to be known by her stage name (rather) than her real name, but Moira was a complete professional."
Celebrating the funeral Mass, Fr Denis Quinn remembered Moira's "lovely" sense of humour. "The one thing I can say at the end of my life as a priest will be that I met some lovely human beings along the way -- Moira was one of those," he said.
