MOTORISTS face an extra 243 speed camera checks nationwide from the end of the month, gardai have revealed.

It will bring to 727 the number of GoSafe privately operated speed camera locations covering more than 2,300km of Ireland’s road network.

The new locations of the speed checks can be found on the Garda website www.garda.ie/gosafe.htm.

Launching the new camera locations, gardai revealed that the drivers are slowing down in fear of being caught by the new private GoSafe vans.

Less than one person per hour out of thousands of cars is caught over the speed limit.

Since the cameras started in November 2010, more than 408,000 drivers have been hit with speed penalty points as a result of being caught with both GoSafe and Garda robot vans.

More than 60pc of the new 243 stretches where cameras will be sited are regional or local roads with the remainder on national roads.
