Motorist killed on M7

A man was killed in a car crash on the M7 motorway in Laois last night. The man aged in his 40s died when the car in which he was travelling was involved in the single vehicle accident. It occurred near junction 16 near Portlaoise shortly before 10pm.

Gardai diverted traffic off the M7 at J16 and allowed it to return at J17 in the immediate aftermath of the crash. The area was sealed off for examination by scene investigators.

TOURIST SPENDING UP

SPENDING by overseas visitors to Ireland grew by over 9pc to €4.1bn last year, while Irish people spent €5.26bn on trips abroad.

And the amount foreign tourists spent while on holiday here – excluding fares – grew by 12pc, showing tourism's importance to economic recovery and jobs across the country, Tourism Minister Leo Varadkar said.

FLU CLAIMS 23 LIVES

The spread of flu continues to wane but the official death toll from the disease so far this winter is now 23, according to the latest report.

Although the threat of flu is receding, there continue to be confirmed hospital and intensive care admissions, said the Health Protection Surveillance Centre.
