A young man has died following a single vehicle accident on the Cork-Waterford road.
The accident, at Muckridge outside Youghal in east Cork, happened at 7.15am and forced the closure of part of the N25 Cork-Waterford road.
The accident occurred on a stretch of the Youghal bypass a short distance from Youghal Bridge over the River Blackwater estuary.
The 28 year old driver was critically injured when his vehicle went out of control and collided with a concrete bridge support.
He was treated at the scene by paramedics and airlifted to Cork University Hospital (CUH) by an Irish Coastguard helicopter.
However, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The road was closed for five hours to allow for crash investigation experts to examine the scene.
Gardai have appealed for anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact Midleton Garda Station on (021) 4621550 or the Garda Confidential Line (1800) 666111.
Gardai said they could not speculate as to the cause of the tragic collision but weather conditions are one of the factors under consideration.
