Motorcyclist dies following collision with car

A motorcyclist has died following a collision with a car this evening.

The man in his late 20s was seriously injured when his motorcycle collided with a car on the old Portlaoise to Ballybrittas Rd(R419) at The Heath, Co Laois at around 7.20pm.

He was taken to Portlaoise hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the car, a woman aged 75, was also taken to Portlaoise hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The road is closed to facilitate a forensic collision examination and local diversions are in place. The road is expected to remain closed until tomorrow afternoon.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to contact Portlaoise Garda station on 057 8674100, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

Meanwhile, a man is in a critical condition tonight following another road traffic accident earlier today.

A car and a 4 x4 collided two miles east of Togher village in Co Cork on the Bantry to Crookestown Road, known locally as Bantry Line, R585 at around 5.30pm.

The driver of the car, who is in his 30s, was seriously injured and was airlifted to Cork University Hospital where he is described as being in a critical condition.

The male driver of the 4x4 was also taken to Cork University Hospital but his injuries are described as non-life threatening.

There was no one else in either vehicle.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to contact them at Clonakilty Garda station on 023 8821570, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

A garda spokeperson said the road is closed to facilitate a forensic collision examination. Diversions are in place.
