Motorcyclist (32) killed in van crash

Anita Guidera

A motorcyclist was killed instantly yesterday afternoon when his bike collided with a trailer-towing van travelling in the same direction.

The collision happened on the N59 in west Sligo, 2km from the village of Dromore West, at about 2.30pm.

Gardai believe the van may have been about to make a right-hand turn when the motorbike, which was travelling behind, collided with it.

The victim, named locally as Martin Devaney (32), from Greenhills Estate, Ballina, Co Mayo was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Devaney, who was a father of two young children, worked at his father's business.

Deputy Mayor of Ballina, Peter Clarke, said the town was in shock at the tragedy.

"Our thoughts go out to his young family and his parents, Marian and Michael at this awful time," he said.
