Motorcyclist (20s) dies following head-on collision with car

A motorcyclist has died after sustaining injuries in an head-on collision in west Cork.

The accident occurred shortly before 4pm on the Skibbereen-Drimoleague Road.

The motorcycle was in head-on collision with a car travelling in the opposite direction.

It is understood that the man - aged in his early twenties - was a tourist holidaying in Ireland.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the car was taken to Cork University Hospital with injuries described as not life threatening.

The road was immediately closed and Skibbereen Gardai urged motorists to avoid the area and use diversions on alternative routes.

Gardai have appealed for anyone who was travelling on the road at the time or who may have witnessed the collision to contact them.

Accident scene investigators were examining the stretch of roadway involved.

Weather conditions at the time were described as a very good with excellent visibility.
