A woman was shot dead and her daughter shot and seriously injured in an attack on their home in southwest Dublin this afternoon.

This evening, locals have named the deceased as Mary Dargan and her daughter as Karina Dargan

Local people said that they heard shots after a man, understood to be a neighbour, walked into the house on Killinarden Road just after 4pm.

Gardai believe the man shot the women inside the house then turned the handgun on himself. The killing was said to be not gang related.

The mother - in her 60s - was declared dead at the scene and her daughter - in her 30s - was taken to St James' Hospital where her condition was given as "serious".

It is understood she suffered a gunshot wound to her face.

Gardai said that a man who suffered a less serious gunshot wound was arrested after he was also taken to St James' Hospital.

The man - in his early 60s - is known locally and is not related to the mother and daughter.

A handgun was recovered at the scene.

Gardai had earlier been withholding details of the identities of the victims until relatives could be contacted.

The victims' ages were also not known though the daughter is understood to be an adult.
