The mother of an 11-year-old girl found dead in her home 18 months ago has been arrested.

Dr Bernadette Scully, who is in her fifties, was arrested by gardai this morning in connection to their 'homicide investigation' into the death of Emily Barut (11).

Emily, Dr Scully's only child, died at her home on Bachelor's Walk, Tullamore, Co Offaly, on September 15, 2012.

Dr Scully is currently being detained at Tullamore Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

Emily, who suffered from severe physical and mental disabilities since birth, had endured added complications following surgery before her death. It was known that she was in extreme pain and distress.

Emily's body was discovered at the home she shared with her mother by the GP's partner, a music composer.

He made the tragic discovery when he returned to the Tullamore, Co Offaly, bungalow.
