More couples opt for 'fertilitytourism' abroad

IRISH couples are at the vanguard of a new wave of 'fertility tourism' accessing techniques available in Spain, Denmark and the Czech Republic.

The number of couples enquiring about pioneering IVF procedures has increased by 465pc in the last 12 months.

"The internet has made IVF treatment abroad more accessible and more appealing," said Declan Keane, Senior Clinical Embryologist with ReproMed Ireland.

"Until recently, they could not access some services from here, like donor sperm. Now they can," he said.
