More arrests in contraband cigarettes crackdown

ANOTHER two men men have been arrested as raids targeting organised crime gangs in the south-east of the country continued for a second day.

Thirteen people, including two women, were detained as part of a crackdown on the contraband cigarette trade and drug trafficking.



More than 30 homes and businesses in Carlow, Meath, Offaly, Laois, Tipperary and Waterford have been searched as part of the investigation.



The group, aged from 18 to 54, were detained at a number of Garda stations across the region.



Three men held yesterday have been released without charge.



All other suspects can be quizzed for up to seven days under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act.



The raids were part of an operation set up in the Carlow district 11 months ago to target organised criminal activity, drug trafficking and the possession of firearms in the region.



Since then there have been 18 seizures of drugs, amounting to 4.4 million euro (£3.8 million), and cash.
