RTÉ has unveiled a new master plan for its Donnybrook campus that involves the selling off of lands for the development of 500 houses.

It is believed RTÉ could realise €50m from the sale.

As part of the sell-off, RTÉ has confirmed that it is shelving its ambitious 'Project 2025' redevelopment plan "due to changed economic circumstances" and is to instead consolidate its operations in the south-eastern section of its 32-acre D4 campus.

Granted a 10-year planning permission in 2010, 'Project 2025' envisaged a 103,553sq metre broadcast facility.

However, consultants for RTÉ now state that its future floorspace needs only 52,000sq metres, made up of 40,000sq metres in office accommodation and 12,000sq metres in studio space.

The broadcaster also requires space for a film set and a creché facility.

Roughly 20pc of RTÉ's existing car parking spaces will be eliminated in the new plan.

The shelving of 'Project 2025' and the planned sell-off of lands comes after the broadcaster recorded a loss of €2.8m last year.
