Modern twist for historic chase
THE world's oldest steeplechase, in Co Cork, is to be re-created today with the use of horsepower instead of hooves.
The steeplechase will be brought into the 21st century, swapping horses for motorbikes at the home of the first-ever steeplechase race more than 340 years ago.
The race involved jumping stone walls, ditches and hedges as they presented themselves. By keeping the steeple of the church in sight, the riders could see their finishing point.
Motocross champion Stuart Edmonds said he was "totally psyched" for the event.
"It's going to be fast, competitive and push all the racers to their limits," he said.
